Christmas work parties: Colleagues, Cheers (and fears)

The Ultimate Team Building Experience

The holidays are right around the corner, and as the year winds down, some of us are getting excited for the annual office parties, while others of us are nervously awaiting an evening of socialising with co-workers and managers outside of the comfort of the office and the daily grind. A few of us might even still be living down past experiences from years gone by that remind us that the holidays might only come around once a year, but what happens at the annual holiday party can stay with us for many years to come!

In the spirit of the holidays, we here at Bluehat group want to make sure that you are excited for your annual parties and ready to make the most of this joyous occasion. As you navigate new realms of inebriated social interaction through a plethora of champagne, mulled wine, egg nog and questionable buffet food, the Christmas party suddenly becomes a very viable team building experience. But, remember, there’s a thin line between building social connections with colleagues and scaring people; therefore we’ve come up with a little list of dos and don’ts that will ensure that you make the most of your work party. It’s not rocket science, but if you keep a few simple thoughts in mind, we are sure that you can have a great time and start the New Year in great spirits with your colleagues!

Do dress for the occasion. Often, the venue will designate the dress code, so make sure to check into that. Otherwise, remember that you are still going to a party as a representative of your company, so it’s important tomaintain a level of professionalism.

Don’t think of this as the chance to show your co-workers your clubbing style. In other words, don’t wear anything too flashy or revealing.

Do take the opportunity to network. This is the perfect chance for you to speak with people who you might not see or work with regularly. It is an opportunity to get to know people better, and it is also a chance to understand how different people in the company can influence your role in the company.

Don’t isolate yourself with the same people who you work with every day or the people who you go for drinks with after work. This is a chance to present yourself as part of the team, and you want to appear open to others rather than unapproachable in a small clique.

Do enjoy the festive spirit. Take this chance to enjoy socialising with your colleagues outside of work. Have a drink (or two) with people you don’t normally spend time with outside of the office, and appreciate the chance to chat about things other than work.

Don’t overdo it! Just because it’s a holiday party and it might be an open bar, it doesn’t mean that you should take advantage of this aspect of the evening. Remember that you are still at a work event, and you will still have to work with these people (maybe the next day)! A social drink is different from a ranting and raving session with your friends. Remember that you can’t take back things that you say, and even though this event might not take place in the office, it can affect how you are perceived by your co-workers.

We hope that these little tips are already getting you ready and excited for your holiday parties! Just because we work together it doesn’t mean that we can’t have fun together. Importantly, work parties can also be great ways to enhance co-worker relationships and strengthen the team.

Ps. Don’t snog your boss

*Bluehat group does not endorse binge drinking at Christmas party events!
