9-5 or 9-3?

Employers in Sweden are introducing 6 hour working days in the hope that it will boost productivity and employee morale. The concept works on the principle that employees can be equally as efficient in a shorter working time and will be generally happier as they have more time to invest in their private lives.

Here at Blueuhat, we’ve recently reduced the working day by one hour and introduced a flexible working hours rota whereby staff can work their 8 working hours anytime between 8am and 6pm, inclusive of a mandatory hour for lunch.

In a slightly different approach, Virgin recently adopted an unlimited employee holiday system. Employees can take holiday without notice as and when they choose.

We should focus on what people get done, not on how many hours or days worked. Just as we don’t have a nine-to-five policy, we don’t need a vacation policy,” says Richard Branson.

Handing over the power to staff and offering a flexible approach to the way we look at work is an increasingly prevalent topic of conversation as employers look to reshape and modernise the traditional working landscape.
